    8:30pm

    Spotted Mallard

    314 Sydney Road, Brunswick

Baba Yaga Orkestar is an original folk ensemble dedicated to exploring a range of musical traditions. Evolving from an interest in Eastern European music, and armed with a slew of original compositions, the Orkestar’s sound is a heady combination of accordion, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, double bass and percussion.

Baba Yaga Orkestar's first show at the Spotted Mallard will feature two sets: the first of traditional Balkan-influenced repetoire, the second of swinging, exotica-tinged tunes.

    The Substation

    1 Market St Newport

Mooshim is a cinematic improvisational ensemble that explores the grey areas that otherwise define typical genres such as 3rd Stream, Minimalism, organic improvisational and 21st Century Art Music.

Their music captures an array of moods including picturesque soundscapes that create a sense of timelessness, to episodes of destructive measure that demand the attention of horror and remorse.

    Festival of Toy Music

    Brisbane Powerhouse

    119 Lamington St New Farm

What do 29 world-class classical, jazz, and electronic musicians do with a collection of toy musical instruments? Create world-class toy music of course!

If you’re a fan of jazz, folk, electronica and experimental music then toy music might just be your next passion. Come along to the Festival of Toy Music where talented musicians combine serious talent with whimsical and witty toy instruments to create songs and soundscapes unlike any other.

Join us for two concerts – a free jamming session late in the evening and double-bill performance featuring New York’s ‘Queen of the toy piano’ Margaret Leng Tan with Australian acts Clocked Out, Matthew Horsley, Toy Death and Adam Simmons’ Toy Band.

Together these incredible musicians bring out the toybox to create music based on tiny pianos, melodicas, tin whistles, plastic accordions, bicycle bells, spinning tops and a collection of circuit-bent toys.

There are also workshops with professional musicians for children – they can play tin whistle games with multi-instrumentalist Matthew Horsley or make a music box with Adam Simmons to play and keep.

Immerse yourself in toy music and join us for free demonstrations throughout the afternoon and play in the Dream Percussion installation which will take over the Turbine Platform for the festival.

  1. Dear Matthew,

My wife and I were at the MRC Salon last night (Tuesday 25the March 2014) to hear you play with Marshall McGuire and the Ludovico’s Band.
What a great night and congratulations to all concerned.

Our 9 year old grandson is learning the drums at his Primary School at Mt. Dandenong and is showing great promise.
We were sorry that he was not with us last night to hear and see your performance on the drums.
Can you tell us where you will be next performing and where as we are sure that he would be inspired to see and hear you?
Any chance of another gig with Ludovicio’s Band?
We look forward to hearing your playing on the Uilleann Pipes after you visit to Ireland.

    Regards,

    Jack Ide

    • Thanks a lot, Jack. Glad you enjoyed it. I don’t actually have too much coming up for the next month or so. The next major project is a contemporary opera for the Next Wave Festival in May but I’m not doing much in the way of conventional percussion for that. I’ll be overseas for the next Ludovico’s gig but I’d certainly love to work with them again. Things will very likely pop up. I’ll keep you posted.

      Thanks again,

      Matt

  2. Hi Matt, I am the Irish Warpiper that you have seen at various festivals along with my piping partner Tracy, we try to see you as much as we can. My work mate Peter Sullivan, you’ll know his face has just told me that your in a bit of a pickle with finances for your debut cd. He told me about a website that is backing you up, also he told me about the various ways or ‘deals’ which people can help. What about a show at my house in Fairfield before I have to sell and move out of my house?? It would be a great fare well. I saw your concert in the city, I think in Feb, didn’t get a chance to tell you how inspiring it was. Anyway get back to me, and cash up front for you!! Regards Rod

    • Hi Rod, good to hear from you! Sounds like you’ve been pretty well informed. I don’t know about in a pickle but yes, I’m taking preorders and contributions to help fund the album. The website is http://www.pozible.com/project/198185
You’ll see that the performance option is already there for contributions of $150 or more. So yes, a house concert sounds great to me! Thanks and I’ll be in touch very soon.
